Asteroids can't easily leave the so-called Asteroid Belt in the outer Solar system, hence the absolute majority of them pose no threat to Earth. And yet multiple impact craters on Earth, Moon and Mars cannot be accounted for by "rogue" comets' alone straying into the inner Solar system. Apparently, certain events within the Asteroid Belt occasionally push asteroids or their debris out towards the Sun... And some past collision events can still be traced by observing "asteroid families" that appear to have once made up a single celestial body! Here's a report on the latest study that plausibly links some of the most significant impact craters on Earth, Moon and Mars to one such asteroid family. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6980468.stm
