This is a good time of year to see Orion the Hunter: the constellation rises in the east at sunset. Watching Orion ascend, you may experience the little-known "constellation illusion." The idea is the same as the Moon illusion (http://forums.azsociety.net/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1180507177/2#2 ); constellations viewed near the horizon look abnormally large. Go outside tonight and look.

Witness the formation of a new planetary system (unfortunately, no backyard telescope can be of any use here but you can still follow the news...)

A magnetically reversed, high-altitude sunspot emerged on 4th January, marking the beginning of the 24th Solar Cycle, that is expected to peak out in 3-4 years.

WARNING: be careful watching the sun! Do not stare at the sun and never train your optical instruments directly at the sun unless equipped with solar filters!

Saturn's moon Titan has hundreds of times more hydrocarbons than Earth.

Of course, unlike our oil and gas, the origins of Titan's hydrocarbons are not biological -- liquid methane and ethane are pouring down in rain and can be "pumped" right from lakes on the surface.

A lunar eclipse can be observed later tonight (or early tomorrow morning depending on your geographical location in parts of Northern Hemisphere) Here is a timetable to plan your observation:

Auroras are most active in spring -- and the lights actually are not limited to high latitudes... Have a look at what may be behind the phenomenon.

Message and picture from Spaceweather.com:

"SUNSET ALERT: When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look west.  Weather permitting you'll see a slender equinox crescent Moon hanging above the rosy glow of sunset.  Framed by the cobalt blue of early evening, the Moon reveals its "da Vinci glow" or Earthshine, a pale impression of the full Moon inside the vivid crescent--a beautiful sight. Mars was wet

Evidence of widespread phyllosilicates (clay minerals) on Mars points to the red planet's once being a much wetter place!
